The ear is even smarter than we thought.

We don't give much thought to our ears unless we are losing our hearing, have a blocked ear or an ear injury. Scientists, at the University of N.S.W., Australia, have now discovered that the ear uses a hormone in the cochlea to protect our hearing from loud noises. The cochlea is the listening part of the ear and this response is stronger in some people than others.

The discovery leads to many other areas of research to unlock more amazing facts about the human body.

Complementary Medicine in Focus: What is Feldenkrais?

The Feldenkrais method, is a physical
educational system designed to improve movement patterns. The classes explore and bring improvement in movement, posture and breathing which has the ability to improve all aspects of life.
Feldenkrais work is presented in Awareness Through Movement classes and private sessions. Certified practitioners have graduated from training programs approved by the Feldenkrais Guild. The practitioner verbally guides students through a sequence of movements and suggests movement possibilities. When you do a class you become aware of habitual patterns of moving and you find new options, easier ways of moving in everyday activities which improve overall well being. Feldenkrais utilizes our natural abilities to learn, to change and to continue to grow throughout our lives.

"The aim is a body that is organized to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength but increased consciousness of how it works." Moshe Feldenkrais

Who was Feldenkrais?
Moshe Feldenkrais was a physicist and judo expert born in Russia in 1904.
He studied with the originator of Judo and was one of the first Europeans to achieve a Black Belt. Originally, to overcome a soccer injury, he incorporated ideas from physics, martial arts, biology and psychology to create his program. In the 1950’s he presented his work in Europe and the United States. Later his books Mind and Body and Bodily Expression and Improving the Ability to Perform (Awareness Through Movement) were published. There are now Feldenkrais Guilds and practitioners all over the world.

Just 20 minutes of walking a day, will burn around 100 calories and prevent that weight gain that just gradually creeps on year after year.

It is also good news that it can be incidental minutes, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and not necessarily a 20 minute block of exercise.
